A simple guide to what happens during a survey.
At Interlock Surveys, we make arranging a measured building survey, a topographical survey or a geospatial survey straightforward. This guide explains our survey process from initial enquiry and quotation through to the site visit, data processing and delivery of your completed drawings, models or reports.
If you are familiar with what happens during a survey, you already know exactly what you need, or you would like advice before getting started, our team is here to help.

1. Send us your requirements
The process begins with your enquiry. If you already know what you need, send us as much information as possible so we can prepare an accurate quotation.
Helpful information includes:
- Existing plans or drawings
- Photographs of the property or site
- Title documents
- An outline of the survey area
- Any specification documents
If you are unsure what type of survey is required or what happens during a survey, just get in touch. We can talk through the options and recommend the most suitable next steps.
2. Receive your quotation
Once we have reviewed your enquiry, we will prepare a detailed quotation for the work.
For most projects, quotations are provided within 48 hours. Your quotation will include the agreed scope, an order form and our terms and conditions.
3. Confirm your order
If you are happy to proceed, simply complete and return the order form provided with your quotation.
This confirms the scope of work, authorises us to proceed, and provides important information such as site access details and invoicing information.
4. We schedule the survey
Once your order has been received, we will arrange the site work around your timings, availability and project deadlines.
Where access needs to be coordinated with tenants, managing agents or other third parties, we can help organise this through the appropriate channels.
5. Our surveyors attend the site
On the agreed date, one or more qualified surveyors will attend your property or site.
They may use specialist measuring equipment such as total stations, 3D laser scanners, GNSS receivers, laser distance meters, drainage cameras, ground-penetrating radar or drones, depending on the survey brief.
Most of our work is non-intrusive. We will need safe access to the areas being surveyed, but there is usually no drilling, no mess and no need to switch off services.
6. We process the data
After the site visit, the measurements, scans, photographs and survey data are processed by our team.
Depending on the project, your deliverables may include:
- Floor plans
- Elevations
- Sections
- Topographic plans
- 3D models
- Drainage or utility survey information
- Reports or supporting datasets
Where client input is required, drawings or reports can be issued in draft first for review before finalisation.
7. Receive your finished survey
Once complete, your finished survey deliverables will be issued electronically.
Turnaround times depend on the size and complexity of the project. Smaller projects may be completed within a few working days, while larger or more detailed surveys may take longer. We will confirm the expected timescale with you.
If anything is unclear when you receive your survey, please let us know promptly, and we will be happy to help.
