Red House Glass Cone, Wordsley

Location: Wordsley
Service: Monitoring

Sector: Heritage & Conservation

Situated at the heart of the historic Stourbridge Glass Quarter and next to the Stourbridge Canal, the Red House Glass Cone is one of only four left in the UK. It was built in 1788 and used as a glasshouse, manufacturing glass until 1936.

Interlocks was contracted to monitor the 236 year old, 27m high grade II listed structure over a period of 18 months whilst repairs were taking place to ensure works did not cause movement in the structure.

Monitoring was unusually challenging due to the complex scaffolding surrounding the cone and the tight conditions internally. In order to future-proof the project, the team installed permanent prism targets prior to removal of the scaffold, so that accurate monitoring can continue long into the future.
